"Look for a strong support team and find other people with shared interests who will help you move forward in life."
After working in hospitality, media sales and journalism, Danella decided to take a break to focus on herself by travelling the world, visiting 9 countries over 9 years. She returned to the Philippines with a fresh mind and the desire to make a difference.
Danella began mixing with a lot of entrepreneurs and realised there was lack of support for new businesses across the Philippines. This prompted her to create Full Suite, a company helping small businesses with their accounting and tax systems, allowing them to focus on strategy and core business operations. She also set up another business, Homegrown, providing niche online content for entrepreneurs and business owners in the Philippines.
“We want to take the headache out of running a business so that you can better use your energy to make sure your business thrives, which, in turn, I hope, will help uplift the Philippines. We want to make it possible for even the smallest enterprise to flourish in this economy, while being protected—not smothered—by the laws, logistics and bureaucratic processes of doing business.”
Ending the bureaucratic process
“The Philippines is full of passionate people with inspiring ideas,” says Danella. She admitted that new businesses are weighed down by tons of paperwork and legal requirements that sap the energy from other more profitable and purposeful tasks and ideas. This was her inspiration behind Full Suite.
Homegrown’s activities are there to support, empower and harness the power of Filipino start-ups by celebrating the inspirational stories of entrepreneurs in the country, as well as educating Filipinos about best practices in business.
Support with passion
Danella says that frequently changing policies and procedures, as well as the perception of corruption, are a constant challenge for her business. However, on a daily basis she maintains constant communication with clients and 100% compliance with policies.
Her goal is to maintain a fun and supportive culture within her business. “Look for a strong support team and find other people with shared interests who will help you move forward in life,” she says. She encourages everyone to surround themselves with ‘growth friends’ who will engage, grow with, and energise each other. “They bring out the best in you, and you in them,” Danella explains.
Engaging a community
Danella truly believes Facebook has played a key role in helping build her communities online, and is a great tool to get discussions going, and organise events.
Through Facebook she wants to build up a transparent system for setting up a business, and continue to build content that is tailored to the needs of the community.
Striking a healthy balance
Many business owners struggle to separate their work and personal lives. For her own wellbeing, Danella makes an effort to take breaks—whether curated or unplanned—and is in the constant pursuit of balance and self-development.
This, she believes will help her achieve long-term growth—both personally and professionally. “I try to apply the practices of yoga to my daily life, even in business,” she says.
Danella encourages all aspiring entrepreneurs to find that balance between passion and priorities. “You need both to survive and succeed, and keep you alive.”
