The main event
"I like to think that others will get inspired by our story, by setting an example of hard work and persistence. That’s why I go to work every day."
For some people, planning an event, whether large or small, can be a nightmare. For Eventtus co-founder and CEO, Mai Medhat, it’s a pleasure.
Her app, which she co-created with her friend Nihal Fares, is an engagement platform and mobile app for event planning, networking and ticketing. Eventtus helps event organizers quickly and easily create an interactive mobile app for their events in a few minutes. Through the app, organizers can then share content, such as the agendas, speaker bios, and exhibitors. Polls and surveys can be used to provide real-time feedback, and Eventtus’ post- event analytics help organizers understand their audiences, measure success, and improve future planning.
It’s a one stop shop to make the creation, curation and running of events as seamless and easy as possible. And, unsurprisingly, Mai had her lightbulb moment while attending an event!
Building better communication
“I had always had a dream of establishing my own company and changing the world,” says Mai. “My friend and business partner, Nihal, and I toyed around with different ideas, but one day we attended the first Startup Weekend event in Cairo and it was the perfect opportunity to get into the startup world.”
Mai’s keen eye and passion for business and tech helped her single out a problem that needed a solution. “We noticed a gap in how events are handled,” she remembers. “We both realized there is a big communication gap between organizers and attendees. We had the same feeling a week later when we attended TEDxCairo. We said [to each other] we had to do something about it. We said there should be a better way for organizers to manage their events and for attendees to get a full rounded event experience. This is when we researched the idea thoroughly and realized we can actually do something about it. We both quit our jobs to pursuit what is now Eventtus.”
Driven to success
This singular drive and conviction has powered Mai throughout her education and onto her successful career launching Eventtus in 2012. A computer engineer by trade, Mai graduated from Ain Shams university in 2009 and worked in a number of startups before launching Eventtus, where she fulfils a number of roles as CEO.
Mai’s ambition led her to be recognised as one of the world’s most promising innovators at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2016. Mai represented the Middle East startup community on a panel with Barack Obama and Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
This exposure has been invaluable for Eventtus, but has also been an inspiration for other female entrepreneurs, something which Mai is equally passionate about. “I participated in few mentorship programs for university students,” she says. “But I believe the best way I can inspire people is by succeeding in my job and building a world class product that is used by millions around the world.”
Always in touch
Eventtus is inspired by the need for better communication between event organisers and attendees. And Mai continues to learn about the importance of communication as she travels the world. “A big part of my job is traveling and attending events all over the world,” says Mai. “Social media and communication tools play a major role in my life, helping me to stay connected with my family, friends and employees.”
And Facebook has, and continues to be, a key driver in the growth of Eventtus, too. “As a business we use Facebook every day to promote our services, reach out to events and find new leads. We started Eventtus with limited resources and social media was our main marketing channel to promote, find events and get more customers.”
Like any entrepreneur, Mai lives and breathes the product she created. Mai’s ambition and belief in her business is an invaluable lesson for entrepreneurs. “I have a dream of changing how people experience events,” says Mai. “I believe in the power of networking and how people can benefit from events. I want to use technology to provide the right tools to facilitates attendees experience before during and after the event.”
