It is possible to find and trust someone else to run the business side of your business—that’s the only way you can put on your strategic hat and truly grow.

Lauren Fried doesn’t do things by halves. This advertising whiz turned entrepreneur is recognised across Australia as one of the best in business.

Since launching Pulse Marketing in 2003, her full-service advertising agency has earned her industry applause including top agency awards, and even landed her a regular slot as an industry expert on the top television show, The Gruen Transfer.

Learning to grow

But it hasn’t been an easy ride getting to where she is today.

13 years ago Lauren was working a 9-5 job, but never quite felt satisfied. Armed with a laptop, $5000 and a phone, she decided to take the leap and go out on her own.

Initially, Lauren tried to do everything by herself, but it was just too much. She recruited a General Manager and says it was the best thing she did, giving her the freedom to grow and develop her new business.

“This person may seem like a mystical unicorn, but it is possible to find and trust someone else to run the business side of your business – that’s the only way you can put on your strategic hat and truly grow your business,” says Lauren.

Forging strong relationships

With Lauren’s direction, Pulse Marketing focuses on building strong client relationships. “We are a seamless extension of every client’s marketing department,” says Lauren who believes that the more you know about a business, the better the ideas will be.

Lauren says Facebook has been an invaluable marketing resource. “I use the platform to share content with clients and give them an insight into not only who I am as a businesswoman, but as a person.”

Through Facebook, she’s now reaching an audience of nearly 15,000.

“Facebook helps keep me at top of mind when businesses need some help with growing theirs. It’s also another channel for potential clients to get in touch with me,” Lauren explains.

The next chapter

With any business there will always be ups and downs, and Lauren has managed to come out on top. “The lessons I’ve learnt over the past 13 years have sometimes been brutal, however, always grounding and purposeful,” Lauren admits.

Her goal is to grow Pulse Marketing to have 20 staff and a corpus of 20 clients. “Based on the growth I have planned, I would rather work harder and more effectively for fewer clients,” she says.

Each year she sets learning targets and urges other entrepreneurs to do the same. “As the leader of the business, you’re assumed to know more than everyone else and this takes time and training,” Lauren explains. From seminars to conferences, Lauren ensures that she is always networking and building on opportunities—all of which she believes are a good investment of her time.
